Photo #4 is of particular interest to us, as its context recalls many happy memories. A Google image search identifies these very lovely young ladies as "boozy" students celebrating Halloween 2019. And the setting for this particular bit of bacchanalia is the city of Portsmouth. Many years ago, ladies and gentlemen, more years than we would willingly admit to in polite society, or indeed on this website, we ourselves were a student at the University of Portsmouth. And we were certainly boozy. Halloween wasn't much celebrated in those days, being a more recent phenomenon, but we never passed over an opportunity to fritter away our student grants (we had grants in those days, folks, not loans) on keeping our insides well lubricated. We recall with pleasure evenings spent in the Student Union (the old one, that is, in the ex-NAAFI building on Museum Road), where in between pints of the obligatory snakebite we honed our skills on the pinball machines. We recall with pleasure the many and varied hostelries we frequented, including the hilariously-named Fawcett Inn on Fawcett Road. And inevitably, on seeing this image, we recall with pleasure the lovely young ladies of our then acquaintance. And yes, even in those far-off days there were some very lovely young ladies indeed, at least the equal of those depicted here. Fashions were different, of course; leather and other shiny materials hadn't hit the mainstream other than for jackets, but jeans were much tighter and sexier than they had been for a while, although provocatively short miniskirts, whilst occasionally spotted, weren't noticeably de rigueur, longer and looser styles being preferred. Somehow, despite all these extra-curricular activities, and much to our own surprise and doubtless that of our tutors too, we were eventually awarded our degree. And inevitably, on seeing this image, we wonder what became of all those lovely young ladies of our then acquaintance. Perhaps it's best not to know.
